Yuletide greetings from the Squirrelverse! And welcome to the latest in our series of sporadic (fitful even) updates.
The news, carefully hidden up until now for fear of causing undue concern, is that Rudy has for many months - since the show in fact - been suffering with a degenerative condition in his left wrist that has for long periods prevented him from playing guitar; and that when he has been able to he has been somewhat restricted.
An operation was ordered in June which, after a few cancellations, was finally delivered last week and whilst we are not yet at the point at which we can say if it has been a success or not we are happy to report that it doesn’t appear to have been a disaster.
This hasn’t stopped us progressing with the album, so don’t worry about that, but it has made our approach to it slightly different which in many ways has been even more interesting and rewarding than it might have been.
In fact I would say that we have made enormous progress since we started the journey but via a slightly more circuitous and scenic route than originally planned. Specifically in the last few weeks we have really been high in the hills digging some gold and spirits are high and creativity continues to flow notwithstanding any loss of physical function.
The other news is that the long awaited (soz) T-Shirts are very nearly at the end of their long gestation! Being somewhat fussy we had to divert the first batch to a drawer labelled ‘Can we do anything with these?” It wasn’t a unanimous decision as some thought they were absolutely fine but one squirrel, in particular, kept screaming, ”What have they done with my beautiful vision!!” over and over until we agreed to hold them back and print another batch. He is now recovering in a sanitorium in Switzerland.
All of which, of course, is a neat metaphor for the music making process in this house. (Makes mental note to watch The Agony and The Ecstasy over the Xmas period.)
Have a Happy Christmas, wonderful people, and a prosperous and productive New Year.
